  1. Well, it’s great to see so many people have joined this course.
I hope that more of you will volunteer a contribution to “my memorable book” or offer feedback on any of the lessons you have read.
I’m online regularly and happy to answer any questions on a regular basis.
If there are ideas in the course which you would like to discuss or you feel need to be extended, it would be good to talk.
One of my hopes for the course is that people will start to talk to eachother.
You can see who is online in the “members online” page. Look at the “active” list.
If you want to tackle some of the tasks in the course, look in the “badges” section.

  2. Can men make feminist art?

    • Dear Manuela,
Good question, but I don’t believe this question is somehow the “limit” case/acid test for what is feminism, because it is often raised as a provocation to determine what feminism is.

In Lesson 3, I outlined the problem of definitions: whether or not feminist art is a label, a concept, a category or a description.
If feminist art is a label for artworks (issue-based, documentary or non-figurative), then does it matter what the sex of the producer is?
If feminist art is a concept, does it matter who uses it (in a positive sense – as opposed to a derogatory one)?
If feminist art is a category for art, then does it matter what the sex of the producer is?
If feminist art is a description of a type of art, a style or issue-based work, does it matter about the sex of the producer?

We know not all women producers of art make identifiably feminist art, just as we know there are men (and male artists) who support feminist aims and objectives.
So, sex (as in a male or female person) does not determine “feminist” support, nor the question of which feminists produce art.
The confusion with “art” comes because we believe we can see the subjectivity of the artist in the artwork or that the person is a “guarantee” of the “truth” behind a statement and this is what criticism “detects”? What if we don’t see subjectivity but cultural politics?
How many male artists really engage with feminist cultural politics in the works that they produce?
It is a rare minority that do, given the very sexist cultures that we have.
      It remains a possibility, nevertheless.

Feminist art would be any art that addresses women’s issues with the intention of seeking equality so I’d say men could do this.
